Prompt: Many people argue that it is impossible to create a perfect society because humanity itself is imperfect and any attempt to create such a society leads to the loss of individual freedom and identity. Therefore, they say, it is foolish to even dream about a perfect society. Others, however, disagree and believe not only that such a society is possible but also that humanity should strive to create it.
As a Christian, I believe that the purpose of life is to glorify God and bring about the Kingdom of God “as it is in heaven” to earth, so I would argue that a perfect society is both desirable and achievable, but that it is only achievable through Jesus Christ. A society centred completely around God’s law would be perfect, and to have that is every Christian’s ideal or perfect society. But that is only achievable through Christ, as the bible says:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Jesus. John 14:6
It is true, as the prompt says, that “humanity is imperfect”. Therefore a perfect society cannot happen without Christ, because evil still dwells in this world.
Also, everyone’s idea of a perfect society is different. An anarchist’s perfect society is a world without government, whereas a communist’s perfect society is a world where nobody owns anything, and everyone is paid equally regardless of the amount of work done. A Christian’s perfect society would be one where God’s law is applied to everything. That is, in fact, our great commission: we strive to bring about a perfect society by making disciples of all nations.
